Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing using special needles (from Latin. Acus, ‘needle’ and pungere, ‘prick’) which deals with an individuals’ energy balance-imbalance. It is a very ancient system at least 3,000 years old, and doubtless preceded by discovery of the closely related system of acupressure in late prehistoric times in China: the record of archaeology has revealed hieroglyphics dating from 1,000 BCE suggesting the practice of acupuncture. |

The system itself is based on the Meridian Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine in which the major internal organs (which relate to the concepts of Yin and Yang, and Zhang Fu) of the body are ascribed individual qi/energy channels, to which are added two other meridians Du and Ren of especial importance on the posterior and anterior midline of the body.
